Just like The Proclaimers sang on their 1988 top-five Billboard 100 hit, Dale Rule is going to be that man who walks 1,000 miles for all humans fighting obesity.

On June 23, the 44-year-old from Camas will start in Seaside, Oregon, and walk 1,430 miles along Highway 101, Highway 1 and the Old Coast Highway to San Diego. He hopes to reach that destination by Aug. 1.

Rule said he will need to average 34 miles, and approximately 68,000 steps, per day in order to reach San Diego in 40 days. He looks forward to crossing the state line into California on foot. He also cannot wait to walk across The Golden Gate Bridge.

“This is an exciting and massive task I am taking on,” Rule said. “I am thrilled for the opportunity to accomplish this walk.”

The goal of the walk is to bring awareness to Rule’s non-profit, “Everyone Walk.” Rule’s mission is to build walking and athletic parks in every state, with the first one being built in Camas. Each park will be a fully enclosed 40-acre facility that will be free to the public and funded through the non-profit. All Rule asks is for people from around the country to donate $1 a month to make his dream come true for everyone.

While on his walk to San Diego, Rule will also promote his book “Is The Prize Worth The Price?” It details how he overcame his own battle with obesity, lost 140 pounds and keeps the weight off by walking daily.

Rule said he is looking for sponsors and donations to help fund this trip. He hopes to walk 12 hours on most days, while resting, recovering and sleeping in an R.V.

Rule’s son, Jeffery, and his mother, Kathy, will follow him in the R.V. His wife, Lya, and sons, Joey and Josh, will meet them in San Diego.

Rule thanks his partners Nautilus Cares, The Barbers, 3rd Heart Tattoo Anctil Heating and Cooling, Baseline Industrial Construction, Lead The Followers Clothing, and families in Camas who have pledged their support.
